Student/ Youth Discipleship Captain
Please note: These job descriptions were composed for medium to large sized outreaches with Impact World Tour. For smaller events not all positions or simplified procedures might be required, please apply common sense in determining the needs for your community.
Responsibilities of the Student/ Youth Discipleship Captain
- Recruit youth to be Local Links and small group leaders
- Work with the IWT Coordinator to plan youth Local Link Trainings
- Research discipleship programs in local schools and Para church organizations.
- Collect information on youth discipleship from church discipleship plans.
Ensure that IWT discipleship programs are carried out and inquirers are adequately discipled for at least 8 weeks following the campaign
This Captain will work closely with the Discipleship Team, while focusing exclusively on the youth. (Please see Discipleship Team Description) The main responsibilities of this Captain are to recruit youth to be Local Links, track their commitment to disciple inquirers and communicate with the Impact World Tour office after the Campaign.
Local Link Team
- Work with the Impact World Tour Coordinator to plan youth specific Local Link Trainings.
- Recruit youth from every youth group to be Local Links. Make sure that every youth group gets Local Link Applications and every youth pastor is encouraging their youth to attend trainings.
- As Local Link trainings occur, keep youth pastors updated as to which youth have attended and call any youth that applied but have not attended yet.
Training
The Local Links will be trained in a 4-hour training session. This training will include: elements of the gospel, sharing your testimony, the tract, the altar call procedure and discipleship methods.
Discipleship Team
The Youth Discipleship Captain will work closely with the Discipleship Team, focusing exclusively on the long-term strategies for discipleship. The main responsibilities of this team are to create and implement discipleship strategies.
Training and Input
Organize training sessions for new disciplers – either existing small group leaders or believers wanting to be involved for the first time. We suggest 2-hour sessions on several consecutive weekends. Materials and Trainers should be agreed on by the IWT Coordinator and the Discipleship Team.
Discipleship at Schools
Ensure all schools have a discipleship group for the appropriate age group – e.g. Young Life, Christian Fellowship, Athletes in Action, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, etc. Work together with these leaders to create places for inquirers to be discipled. For those schools without discipleship groups – coordinate with Youth pastors and leaders to recruit a leader and get started.
Youth Small Groups
Location of Youth Small Groups
They should be geographically located. As youth inquirers come forward during the Tour Week they would receive a flyer (designed to attract youth) with the location of the cells on it and the Local Link would help them find the right one and then attend it with them. They may need to organize transportation for the inquirer as well, if only to ensure they actually come.
Small groups should be located in places youth are already comfortable with. This is generally not in a church. School, coffee shop, McDonalds, homes, Skate Park are some examples of the places where they live. They will be much more at ease here and are more likely to come.
These age specific teams should focus on activating & training Christians to disciple in each of these age groups. Young Adults & Youth will be most effective discipling their peers or those slightly younger. Adults, in particular, Mums will be most effective discipling children and parents.
Prior to the Campaign
- Obtain a list of the available small groups at the participating churches that have ministry focused on the appropriate age group from the Church Discipleship Team.
- Talk with any existing ministries in the community that focus on the discipleship of this group. Obtain information from them about their meeting times and locations, leaders, content, materials, etc.
- If there are no existing ministries at a school, is there a local church or group of local churches that would be willing to start one? One idea for elementary/primary school ministries is to hold an after school program once a week (e.g. Good News Club). New meetings should be set up and running as soon as possible before the IWT Campaigns begins.
- Encourage and recruit Disciplers (Mums for children, Youth, Young Adults etc.) to attend the Discipleship Training Seminars to learn how to begin appropriate discipleship. This does not take “super-Christians” – all of us can do this.
- Work with the Strategic Discipleship Team to ensure every neighborhood has a group.
- The new groups information should be given to the Church Discipleship Team at least 1 month prior to the outreach events so that small group flyers may be printed.
- Hold a meeting with the small group leaders and existing ministry leaders to verify they understand the IWT Discipleship Plan. This will be an important network to continue working together (after IWT) on the transformation of your community.
- Ensure Pre IWT and Post IWT discipleship events are being planned by the Children & Youth Teams with a focus toward active discipleship of the inquirers.
- Include an advertisement for the post campaign events in the appropriate age small group flyer (could include a value added ticket).
After the Campaign
- Ensure Discipleship Groups are contacting the New Believers and that they are being established in the groups.
- Track the small groups for at least eight weeks after the campaign. Those inquirers not attending any Discipleship Group – should be referred to the Advanced Discipleship Team.
- Assist in planning the Post-Campaign Events ensuring active discipleship in relationship with God and evangelism is taking place.
